Geothermal Energy is the most efficient method of heating and cooling your home or business. The Earth absorbs almost 50% of all solar energy and remains at approximately 50 °F year round.
Working with an underground pipe loop system, a Geothermal unit utilizes this constant temperature to exchange energy between your living space and the Earth as needed for Heating and Cooling.
Water is circulated though the underground pipe loop system to and from the Geothermal unit, which is generally located in your home's basement. In the winter time, the Geothermal unit extracts 20 degrees of heat energy from the circulated water and returns the clean water to the loop system at approximately 33 degrees. The heat energy extracted is used to create hot air and water for your living space.
In the Summer season, the process works in reverse direction, very efficiently removing heat from your home, adding it to the pipe loop system, and providing your living space with air-conditioning.
Additionally, our systems commonly make use of an accessory that collects all of the waste heat created from running the Geothermal unit, and uses it for pre-heating of your domestic hot water.
The key to the Geothermal system is the transfer of heat energy from the Earth to and from your Home. Our drilling system is used to bore several small diameter holes into the earth. The holes can be in your front yard, back yard, through your driveway, or for larger buildings, we can even do this inside of the building footprint.
In each hole, we install a pipe loop, which is simply a single pipe that goes from the surface, to the bottom of the hole, and back to the surface. The pipe loop carries water which absorbs heat energy from the earth during it’s travels.
The depth of bore holes, and the number of bore holes required varies for every situation. In some cases, only two holes of 150’ depth would be required. The image to the right depicts a home requiring 4 bore holes.
During our first visit to your home, we record pertinent data about your specific location, and we design our loop network accordingly to ensure a perfect and efficient custom solution every time.
On the inside of your home, we install the actual Geothermal Heat Pump unit. This is essentially the part that replaces a traditional furnace, boiler, or air-handler unit.
Inside the Heat Pump, a transfer of energy occurs using the same refrigeration cycle that operates the refrigerator in your kitchen and the air conditioner in your car. It’s a process known as the Carnot Cycle, it’s tried and true, and it’s been around for a very long time.
The Heat Pump is connected to the underground pipe loop network, and it exchanges the heat from the water in the pipe network with the air in your living space. Hot air for heating, and cold air for air-conditioning are both made made inside of the Heat Pump unit.
All you have to do is set your thermostat and relax. It’s healthy, it’s clean, it’s quiet, and it is ultra-efficient!
